Spain never stopped making things by hand. In the back rooms of Barcelona and the old quarters of Madrid there are still people who shape clay on a wheel, set a picture one tile at a time, work silver with a file and their thumbs – slowly, the way it has always been done. No souvenirs. No shortcuts. Just materials, hands, and the particular quiet that settles over a room when everyone in it is absorbed in making something.
You will not watch this from behind a rope. You will sit down at the bench and do it.

Arrive.
Barcelona receives you gently. Rooms in a quiet quarter, the first shared dinner, and a circle of twenty that has been curated to travel well together. No agenda beyond the table and the slow realisation that, for eight days, you have nothing to prove and nothing to produce.
See it, then make it.
A morning with Gaudí - not the photograph-and-move-on kind, but the kind where you stand still long enough to see how a wall of broken tile becomes a living thing. Then, in the afternoon, the hands go in. Under a maker who has done this for decades, you set your own small piece, tile by tile. By evening you understand the morning differently, because now you have felt what it takes.
The making day.
The circle divides into small groups, each drawn to a different material - clay, thread, silver, glass - and each in the hands of a maker who has given a life to it. This is the day the journey is built around, and the quietest. Somewhere in the third hour, the talking stops on its own. The head goes still and the hands take over, and things surface that the head had been keeping busy enough to avoid. Nobody names this out loud. You just notice, on the walk back, that you feel unaccountably lighter.
Finish, and be seen.
The morning is for completing - or, where the material must be fired, for collecting - what you began. Then the afternoon belongs to the camera: our filmmaker photographs the makers, the workshops, and your work as it deserves to be seen, not as a holiday snap but as a record. The Exchange. In the evening, the journey turns both ways. Any explorer who wishes shares something of their own craft - Warli, block-print, a folk form, whatever is theirs - with the circle and a handful of local makers invited to join us. You have spent three days receiving from Spain's makers; tonight, without ceremony, you give something back. No one is asked to perform. But the room where an Indian painter shows a Catalan potter how a Warli figure is built - that is the whole reason for travelling this far.
The train, and the looking.
A high-speed train carries you inland to Madrid, and the register of the journey shifts - from making to looking. An afternoon in front of paintings you have known your whole life as reproductions and are now meeting in the flesh. The pace deliberately drops. After three days of doing, you are allowed simply to receive.
Toledo.
A day inside a walled city that has been a city of makers for a thousand years. Among its workshops, a metalworker inlays gold into blackened steel with a patience that predates the country itself - the craft thread running on, even here, even on the day that looks like sightseeing. You leave the way people have left Toledo for centuries: a little quieter, carrying something.
Madrid, gently.
A slow museum morning, then one last unhurried session with your hands in the afternoon - something light, made to be carried home the same day. In the evening the circle gathers a final time. Each explorer lays out what they made across the week and names one thing they will keep making room for when the ordinary noise returns. Then a long farewell dinner, in no hurry to end.
Return.
Your pieces packed, the book still to come. You leave slower than you arrived, with dust under your nails that will wash off and something under the surface that won't. That is the point. And if you're not ready for it to end, ask us about Andalusia and Ibiza - but that's a conversation for another day.

And, at the heart of it, the makers themselves - mosaicists, potters, weavers, silversmiths who have given their lives to a single craft and will put it into your hands. The remaining meals are deliberately yours - a Barcelona market stall, a Madrid café table, a long lunch nobody scheduled - because some of the week's best conversations happen there, and the food is part of the education.

Before and after - A welcome pack, your circle-of-five, and one video call before anyone flies - so you land among familiar voices. A cohort circle two weeks after you're home, because the journey doesn't end at the airport.
